Spomenik Tour
Embark on the Spomenik Tour to uncover four remarkable WWII memorials—scattered, enigmatic, and often overlooked—located across Western Serbia. These abstract monuments, built between the 1960s and 1980s, were intended to commemorate specific acts of anti-fascist resistance during and after World
Your journey begins at the Mausoleum of Struggle and Victory near Čačak—a striking concrete structure by Bogdan Bogdanović, crowned with carved mythical heads, commemorating local fighters in 1980.
Next, we proceed to the Popina Monument, marking the 1941 battle between German forces and Partisans near Kraljevo—the first frontal engagement in the region—honoring those who fought to liberate the land.
Our route continues to the Ostra Monument, erected in memory of Partisans who faced overwhelming German and Italian forces during the liberation of Čačak in 1944.
The final stop is the powerful Kadinjača Memorial, 14 km from Užice, featuring the famous inscription “The fourteenth kilometer surrendered, but Kadinjača never will,” marking the sacrifice of the Workers’ Battalion and illustrating the fierce defense of the Užice Republic in 1941 .
Each monument stands as a blend of bizarre geometry and profound remembrance, serving as silent narrators of regional resistance and collective memory. Led by a licensed English-speaking guide, this tour offers you an insider’s look into Jugoslovenski spomenik art, the untold stories behind these sculptures, and the turbulent historic events they honor.
