- Journey through nature and discover incredible outdoor wonders
Join us on the historical Kings railroad Tour which blends ancient and not so ancient history with the spectacular natural surroundings of western Serbia. Our journey takes us through the town of Uzice to the Hydroelectric power plant. This example of Tesla engineering brilliance is nestled on the river Djetinja located under Uzice Old Town. Constructed in 1900, being the first electrical plant made according to Tesla’s principles of an alternating current in Europe and second in the world. This symbol of Tesla’s advanced understanding of electricity ensured the importance of its symbolic status for the town of Uzice. Especially impressive as it was completed only five years after the first of its kind on the river Niagara in America.
Our journey continues on the canyon by way of a 6km ride on the tourist train. One is spoilt with beautiful views of the gorge and canyon whilst enjoying the calm pace of this old train. A particular highlight is a visit to the Neolithic archeological park in the canyon of the Djetinja River which is an interpretation of the Uzice Neolithic settlement Gradina. The park has been constructed on the basis of available archival buildings from the period of archaeological research of the Gradina site and modeled on the look contemporary archaeological parks. Then we travel by car over the Vrutci lake where one is treated to a ride over the 77m high bridge, which makes for a great photo shot! We stop off at the Rujno monastery which occupies an important place in the cultural history of the Serbs as it printed the first Serbian book of the Rujan Fourth Gospel, in September 1536 – 1537, it is further recognised as the first printing house in Serbia. Our adventure takes us to the Sargan Eight which is a narrow gauge railroad (heritage railroad, actually) that runs from the nice-looking village of Mokra Gora to the nearby Sargan station. The ride forms an ’8′ form, and hence the name – Sargan Eight. It’s a very picturesque ride through the famous Mokra Gora reserve, considered by many to be the best train rides in Europe
Our tour climaxes with a visit to Drvengrad (meaning Timber Town) This is a famous traditional village that the Serbian film director Emir Kusturica built for his film Life Is a Miracle. Kusturica was the 2005 recipient of the Philippe Rotthier European Architecture award.
Drvengrad has a library, named the Ivo Andrić Library; an artist gallery named Macola in honor of sculptor Dragan Jovićević (it was previously known as Anika, after a character from Ivo Andrić’s prose); Stanley Kubrick Cinema; a main house which houses a cinema-hall in the cellar, a living room, a guest room, a closed yard, a swimming pool, a gymnasium, a sauna and private rooms for the Kusturica family; a sports hall; a restaurant; a cake shop, as well as a souvenir shop; and finally, a Church dedicated to St. Sava.
Since 2008, the village has hosted the annual Küstendorf Film and Music Festival, which showcases films and music from all around the world. The festival is known for not having a red carpet as well as none of the popular Hollywood festival artifacts.
